Newbie soon to set up a AGA 5.5g

Hey all, I've been reading your forum for a couple weeks and have decided to set up a 5.5g AGA planted very soon. I only really have experience with saltwater tanks so this will be a new venture for me. I have a 10 and 5 gallon saltwater running right now The 10 is a reef that has been running great for about 10 months now, so I am pretty good with all the basics for aquariums like lighting and water changes and etc. The 5 is still cycling and is going to be a mantis tank. I was reading this http://www.rexgrigg.com/cycle.htm and coming from salt was shocked lol. I would've never even dreamed of putting anything into an uncycled tank, especially fish. I'm going to use a 15w screw in bulb most likely, and when I'm done I'd kind of like to just have a carpet over a hilly scape with some kind of wood in the middle to look like a tree. What would be a good carpet plant to achieve this with this much light? Oh I also don't know much about fresh water water chem aside from knowelge from salt tanks and water hardness coming from my brewing experience. I'll be using RO/DI water though but I don't know what to do for substrate. I don't really care about the price since I won't need much. What would be the easiest and best for my purposes?

I have no idea about stocking fauna and will have to adjust my saltwater brain to wrap around it, since anymore than 1 tiny fish in a 5.5 for salt is a sin. I do like guppies a lot though, dwarf puffers seem really cool too, and I wouldn't be against a species tank or just having one. Gudgeon's look pretty sweet too, looks like they're a lot like clown gobies, are there any that fit in this size of tank? I don't want a ton of life in there, because I usually like to have close relationships with my fish so I know their needs, habits, etc to take care of them better. However, I do love inverts so snails and shrimp are more than welcome. After looking around this is my want list.

Guppies
Gudgeons
Dario Dario
American Flagfish
Cool Rasboras
Clown Killie
Sparkling Gourami
Dwarf Puffer
Bumblebee gobies
and since I love inverts how ever many shrimp you guys recomend

Which of those fish has the best personality when kept in small numbers? Anyway just thought I'd say hi and thanks for any help you can give me

I have been really wanted to get some micro danios lately, they are so tiny so you can have alot more! but the bumble bee gobies are cute(brackish fish though). dwarf puffer is a good choice for a single species tank..

my two cents

EPC # 330

5.5g nano - Fail.. Guppy mania.

18"cube vivarium - 4 x ventrimaculitus breeding pairs.

10g vert Azureus vivarium

34g Cadlight reef

Yeah that was the problem I was thinking about with the gobies, because otherwise I would definitely go for them. I would like to avoid all salt in this tank so I guess I'll rule them out. I miss my old yellow clown goby so much because he died as a result of a tank leak and a new one would get beat up in either of my salt tanks. If anyone knows much about YCG's, is there any fresh water fish that's as cute and has as much personality as them? Oh and for those who don't know about them, they are a tiny brightly colored fish the "sits" on rocks and coral and hops around all the time. They are coolest fish I've ever owned.

I'd go with either "Cool Rasboraras", Clown Killifish, or Sparkling Gourami. They're all wonderful nano fish, and do well in planted tanks.

For the Cool Rasboras, there's Boraras Brigittae, Boraras Maculatus, and Boraras Merah. They're all sooo pretty and colorful, look them up on google images You could fit about 5-10 in a 5.5 gallon.

Clown Killifish, 1-3 would be ok. Make sure there's a lid because these guys can jump.

Sparkling Gourami 1-4 would be ok. No other comment on them

As for carpet plants, there's a major question - will there be CO2 and/or Flourish Excel dosing in the tank?

Looks like the Boraras are gonna be the winners, but do you have any idea where I could buy them. I might be able to order them from an LFS, but he usually gets a lot more salt shipments than fresh. I'm thinking I'll do a yeast CO2 system and I wouldn't mind dosing flourish excel. Is there any drawbacks to excel? If there isn't then I'll definitely do it.

Endlers are related to the guppy. They are small and pretty colorful. I have lots of them if you want some.

I have Black Bar and Peacock Endlers which are pure endlers and not mixed with any other fish. PM me for a great deal.

So I went out and bought my 5.5 and a 13w daylight lamp from Ross. Pretty nice looking actually and it's the best looking light set up I have. So I think I'm going to buy some Eco Complete and a Red Sea Nano Filter tonight. So I'll have everything in a few days. What plants should I be looking to buy with that light? Also, I always thought glow light tetras were the glo-danios so I never considered them, but saw some today and think I'm going to get some of those.
