Stupid new guy here....

Hi, everyone!

I'm just getting back into freshwater for the first time in about 20 years. I've always done nano reefs, but after seeing some planted nano's on youtube, I figured I'd try this out. The tanks I've seen are breathtaking. Please bare with me, as I am totally uneducated in freshwater and planted tanks.

So here's my setup. I have a Marineland contour 5 gal that used to be salt that I just gutted and cleaned. Obviously I can't use my reef LED, so I need opinions on a good light. So far I'm leaning towards the Fluval Aqualife And Plant LED at petco, on sale thru 12/24 for just $60. I'm open to any other ideas, DIY, anything at all to save money. I'm a paycheck to paycheck kinda guy!

C02? I'm looking at this item on Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0049RL3H4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
At my LFS today the guy said I don't even need C02 for such a small tank and to use seachem flourish excel instead. Input?

Also, any good additives I need to add? I basically want a fully planted tank with a carpet on top of the substrate. Also, website with nice plants would be great. I don't have any shops here in Houston worth a damn in the live plant department.

Thanks guys!

For Excel to be as effective as CO2, you have to dose daily. For smaller tanks, Excel is the cheaper option, but more tedious. If you go CO2, you set it and forget it until your tank runs out.

You could use Miracle Gro Organic Choice Potting Mix as your substrate, and your plants will love you. You could also add a little Osmocote+ to to the bottom of the tank before laying your substrate (even if you use MGOCPM).

As for where to find plants... There's the For Sale/Trade forum here, AquariumPlants.com, LiveAquaria.com, AquaBid.com, and even the bay.

I would not call yourself stupid, you're smart enough to look/ask for help/suggestions instead of blindly diving in and say...grossly over stocking a 2g tank with 100g worth of fish (by their adult size tank needs) which someone on this forum did before...
No experiences with co2 systems myself, I use Seachem Excel though and use this on a 2g and 3g tank (3g has MGOPM soil base capped with sand.. pygmy chain swords and micro swords are going nuts in there).

Due to photobuckets new bs cost for use of images on forums I have deleted all photobucket accounts. I apologize if you enjoyed or found my photos helpful.
