Surface skimmer

Quick question about my nano (12g JBJ nano cube). My Amano shrimp keep getting sucked into the surface skimmer (just recently a few of my small spotted rasboras got sucked in as well). Do I need the surface skimmer for a planted tank? If I do need the skimmer, any thoughts on how to prevent my little guys from getting sucked into the skimmer? I have my pump set to max flow, should I lower that?

Right now all I have in the tank is two cory cats, 5 amano shrimp, 2 (used to be 6 before 4 of them died from the surface skimmer) spotted rasboras. Eventually I will be adding ottos and CPDs. I don't want to add the CPDs until I know I fix this skimmer issue. Thanks in advance for the ideas.

I guess no input. I'll just remove the surface skimmer and turn down the pump.

Cover the skimmer with some netting or a sponge, easy fix.
