My son and I have been working on getting everything in place for building out a 125 gallon low tech planted tank. Along the way, we got a bit distracted running tests with plants, substrates, lighting and filtration in Nano tanks.
While playing with these "natural" planted Nano test tanks, pumping flow and filtration seemed to always be too much and when you place pumps and filters etc. into these small tanks it can be a bit of a visual distraction, so we decided to build our own DIY Nano tank canister filter.
This is a very simple project that will give you a really slick little canister filter. The hardest part was finding the small, robust, 6volt submersible pump that would fit into the lid. The reason I wanted a 6 volt pump was that I wanted to be able to run it off of a small solar panel, battery pack or plug in transformer. I found a manufacturer in China that made the perfect pump and they were kind enough to ship me two to play with.
You can view many photos of the final version of the Nano canister filter here:
Two modifications I might make.
1. Place 7.5 watt 120v heater into the canister
2. Replace clear curved down tubes with tubes running directly into the wall of the tank.
Any comments or suggestions are appreciated. Happy to answer any questions as well.
