CO2 diffuser size vs tank size

My senario is that I have a 5.5 g that occupied by CRS and two Otocinclus. I am currently running an aquaclear 20 for filtration. I found an old Rhinox 2000 (rated for 20-40 g)in my spare parts box that I could use so long as my CO2 levels would not get too high.

I understand that an UNDERSIZED CO2 diffuser would make a difference on the amount of CO2 diffused into the water. But would an OVERSIZED diffuser have adverse effects on the fauna in the tank?

Is it possible the larger diffuser could counter act the effect of the HOB filter?

The size of the diffuser won't matter if you aren't allowing the co2 to come through on the regulator. The diffuser may not work correctly, due to lack of working psi, but that's the only thing being bad about it. It can't allow more or less co2 into a tank if the co2 isn't running to it. How much co2 you allow into the tank is all on you.
