Attempt at Wabi Kusa

I have been wanting to try one of these for a while and finally got around to it. It is a little boring right now but should look good once everything begins to grow.

1. HC
2. Fern from my yard
3. Grass from my yard
4. marselia minuta (the leaves have died and I am hoping that the rhizomes will put out new leaves soon)
5. Flame moss
6. Moss that I found in Norway
7. Fern like moss that I found in Norway

Has anyone grown marselia minuta emerssed? If so how tall does it grow, and do you think it will look good with these other plants?

Has anyone had any luck growing flame moss emerssed?

Tell me what you think!

The marselia minuta that I received was grown emersed, and it was about 1/1/2 to 2 inches tall, and exhibited 1 to 3 leaf growth, submerged only exhibits 1 leaf plants.

Looks like a cool project. Good luck

Looks like it will be nice! I'm still always looking for the perfect glass bowl thats pretty cheap and good quality to get started on these.

I wouldn't exactly call it a Wabi Kasu because the translation is something to the extent of "ball of plants" and yours is more a dish of plants. Its almost a nano pauladarium or nano viviarium.

Looks really cool either way, and I really do like the pot choice.

Thanks for the info eyebeatbadgers. Judging from your description of emerssed marselia I think it will work well in my set up.

A Hill: I saw some great glass containers at target that would have been perfect. I needed something a little smaller though because my girlfriend thinks I am trying to take over the house with aquariums (which I am). The container was cylindrical in shape, was about 12 inches in diameter and about 4 to 5 inches tall. I think they were charging 13$ for it.

I'm not sure that wabi-kusa translates to "ball of plants." I think the definition is a little more open ended than that. "Kusa" translates to grass, and I am assuming the use of the word wabi is a play on the term wabi-sabi.

Anyone have any idea what exactly wabi-kusa is supposed to translate to?

Thanks for the compliments

This is my first time growing emerssed plants underneath artificial light.

I have them under a 26 watt compact florescent. Is there a limited amount of time that I can keep the light on?

Is 14 hours too long?
