roots causing substrate to be a mat

I was pulling some plants out of my 2.5g mostly rotala I now have hairgrass, and a blyxa japonica plant in it. I am wondering if this is normal and I I would want to rescape should I ditch the whole substrate and put some new stuff in. It s ada powersand, I think it is smaller that aquasoil.

Im not too familiar with power sand but you could just gently rub the roots with your fingers untill they let go of the substrate.
