I have flourite (about 3") and the plants love it. I bought some HC from a fellow member and it hasn't taken yet in the flourite. It has only been a month or so. I'm sure that the ottos and SAE's aren't helping either cause they sort of rummage along the bottom and tear it up. Hopefully, some day, it will start to take and grow fast. Here are my pics:

I'm growing HC emersed in two 10 gallon tanks in 1" black flourite. It's been 3 weeks so far, not much activity other than some root growth.

Will keep you updated!

I have Flourite and HC. At first, the HC can be easily uprooted by fish. With patience, the HC stays rooted on Flourite now. After 3 months, the HC formed a thick carpet. It looks really nice now.

I have Aqua Soil with HC too. This setup is much easier. HC rarely float in this setup.

I have had good experiences with flourite, though I had some trouble with getting the cloudiness out of the water, (I didn't rinse enough).

Use tweezers to gently insert it into the substrate.

If emersed, it doesn't need special planting. Just leave it on top of the soil and it will grow roots into the substrate.

If submersed, tweezers do fine--though it might be prone to uprooting from digging fish like cories and loaches.

Make sure do not make the HC pieces too small or they will float.
