Algae eaters for a nano tank?

Hey guys! Recently, my planted 5.5 gallon betta tank has been suffering from an out break of stringy/clumpy brown algae. I can clean the glass, but I can not seem to get it off of the plants. I have tried Cherry shrimp and a nerite snail. The cherry shrimp were getting attacked so, I moved them to a separate tank, and the Nerite snail used to eat a lot of algae, but when I dirted my aquarium, he wouldnt really move. so, I just moved him in to another 10g tank. I have heard that the oto cat would be ok but there was some controversy over the size of the tank they should be kept in. Are there any good Algae eating organisms that would work well in a 5.5g aquarium and not get attacked by the betta fish?
Thank you!

Try putting in the nerite snail in again or get a different nerite snail or different type of snail to put in.
Shrimp and snails are the only ones I can think of for your tank.
Good Luck!
