Are you planning to make a hood or canopy? Two 18w compact fluorescent lamps should allow you to keep most plants, but if you're going "low-light" you could probably get away with just using one 18w CF setup. Another option is a 2x13w CF setup. Lastly, depending on where the tank is going to sit, there are tons of desklamps with great potential that can be used for planted tanks, the "better" fixtures have 27w bulbs, while others can be found in 18w, 13w, and 9w CF fixtures. This may be the most economical method since the fixtures are rather cheap (~$15-30) and usually include a 6,400-6,700K bulb. Browse your local hardware store (Lowes, Home Depot), or visit a Wal-Mart/Target/etc to find a nice compact fluorescent desklamp.

No hood or canopy~open top. But I might put plexi-glass or some bridal veil on some sort of frame perhaps, as I plan on Killifish. I have read they can be jumpers. I like the desklamp idea, maybe something with a gooseneck..hmm? I will check the places you mentioned. I am familiar with the Galaxy lights, but I'm not crazy about the colors. I would prefer black or silver. Thanks for your reply.

The 18w coralife fixture will be perfect for it if you want to go with low-med light. I had one over a 2.5g and it was like having low light but it kept things alive. For really high light I would try and swing two of them or go to home depot and look for their quad bulb desk lamps....they have 27w quad tube PC desk lamps for like $30.

Yep..a Viper clip on would look cool, but a bit overkill don't you think?
It seems like all the sharp looking lights made for small tanks are either from a country I can't get them from, or almost 200$ Besides...see the tank in the background? 2 X 250 MH's and 4 X 110 VHO's....my electric bill for this month is $582....

Hi, yes it's a homemade tank. I have two of them, not sure what to do with the other one. But here is my little tank now. I wish I could understand how the CO2 set ups work.Is there a great book on the subject{ CO2 for dummies perhaps? }

Thanks Tom Barr! Right now I have a 13 wt T-5 6400 K single bulb over the tank. I am trying to buy a 27 wt quad pc lamp.If I add this much light I will need either CO2 or flourish excel correct? If I use the excel, what other ferts do I need? Does anyone know if all these Seachem products are safe with inverts?
