8 Gallon Planted Tank

ok well i snagged a biocube 8 this weekend, and i'm going to do a planted tank... decided not to do the sw route on the nano, i have other ideas for a SW nano.

ok, so i'm going to swap out the actinic light for a 6700k lamp.

i'm assuming the flow will be ok stock.

i'm still stuck on the c02 system. i'm thinking about getting the hagens one with the yeast/sugar... as it's only 7-8 gallons, i don't need a whole lot, i know. i'm trying to keep this setup as simple as possible., and i think anything with a bottle is going to be more trouble than i want to deal with.

where should i place the diffuser?

i'm also going to get a visitherm 25 watt heater. (77-78 degrees should be ok, right?)

i'm planning on some cardinal tetras, and maybe a cory or two... or maybe just all tetras, i love them.

i'm also planning on a piece of driftwood and 4-5 species of plants. should have those decided soon.

i'm very excited about this first foray into a planted tank.

if i'm missing anything glaring, please let me know!

i should have some pictures up later this week.

after reading up on the forum, i'm going to get the nutrafin/hagen c02 system, and do my own mixture instead of using their packets.

i'm having trouble finding an 18w 6700 K power compact bulb
all i see are 6700k/10000K dual bulbs. can anyone link me to one?

would it be beneficial to run all 6500K or is having a 10000K in there good as well.

thanks!
Charlie

that will work.
Also, do not waste money on the hagen/nuytra co2, just use a 2l soda bottle.

okay, well, i was hoping to not do a soda bottle, as that's bigger than i wanted to deal with.

i read on here that the hagen will run for ~3.5 weeks if you do a DIY setup.

can anyone chime in on the red sea setups that use paintball cylinders?

wouldn't you need a diffuser with the soda bottle setup?

yep, but you can buy the ladderthat comes w/hagen seperate.
A 2l bottle is perfect size for a 8gal. really it's the smallest you'd want. otherwise you have to replace it like every week.

well, i had a diy c02 setup on my reef to get calcium into the tank, and it ended up blowing up and making a yeast mess on my wall.

maybe i'll give it another shot.

thanks!

do you know if the red sea one can take a 20 oz bottle? if it can't, i don't think i'd use it.

I'll have some pics up tonight, I should have water in it by the end of the evening!

i got a mini heater that says it's good up to 5 gallons, we'll see how that goes... if not, i'll get the 25w stealth.

i also picked up a cool mounted piece of driftwood, some substrate, and flourite to put in the substrate. we'll see how that does.

i've decided to try not running c02 and see how that does first, then add if necessary.

for stocking, i'm going to do some cardinal tetras, a couple golden rams, and a few shrimp.

can anyone recommend some good snails? are they necessary? i'm coming from a reef setup, and snails are essential in there, but i'm new to planted.

tank on the end table... i haven't put in the flourite yet, but i did add the declorinator/stresscoat. these pics are 10K only. i ended up going with a 7.5w heater pad... seems to keep it pretty stable at 80 with the lights on, and 79 with the lights off. i may change it out, though. is that too hot?

i'm going to order the c02 this weekend, and get my fish this weekend.

i think the driftwood looks really good. i've also ordered a 6000K pc bulb.

any comments are welcome!

Looks cool. I have a heater pad as well (the Hydor one in my 7.5 gallon) and it seems to work well. I have substrate heating in my larger planted tanks and I like the root growth. It seems to make a difference.

In my 10 Gallon I used to run a 4 litre (1 gallon) juice jug for CO2 and it worked quite well.. I guess if it in a living space it may be tough to hide. I used it in my plant only tank when I wanted to grow stuff for use in my other tanks. It worked so well I even got some pearling.

Sounds like you're planning well!

Great start! (not like I really know what I'm doing)
