Which filter for a 6 gallon?

I have a Eclipse System 6 and i am currently running the built in filter (biowheel type). I also have a penguin biowheel 125 in my garage. Do you guys think it would be a better idea to run the penguin on my 6 gal instead of the filter that it came with?

Also, if i should switch to the penguin, can i just take the old standard filter off and throw on the penguin, or do i need to ween the old one off and the new one on?

And last question, how often do you guys reccomend replacing filter cartridges? THe blue marineland ones, with the carbon inside.

Thanks guys!

Personally I would transition the tank to the new filter, but you probably could get away with just changing them just because bacteria will still be present in your substrate. It really depends on the amount of fish you have.

Chenge the cartridge at least once a month. If it gets clogged quickly then change it more often.

If you switch, I would say the transition time depends on your fishload, number of plants, and how often you do water changes. So, as far as weaning time, I don't know, a couple of weeks should be alright. I would think most of the nitrifying bacteria is in the filter's biowheel, sponge or whatever. On the penguins, I think you can modify those filter cartridges so that you lose the carbon and cut filter padding to fit and secure with a rubber band or something. Much cheaper. Some just rinse the old padding of the clogging detritus in tank water from a water change and reuse. That's supposed to save the good bacteria.
