Heater for Acrylic 5 Gallon

I have a 2.5 gallon tank with a dwarf puffer and some cherries and I'd like to get a 5 gallon to separate the two. (The puffer mostly leaves the cherries alone, but I think my chances of getting serious cherry reproduction rolling will go way up when he has his own space!)

My 2.5 gallon (Mini-Bow acrylic) has a 10w CF spiral light and a hydor mini heater under the gravel and it stays nice and toasty. If I decide to keep the 2.5 gallon for the shrimp, could I move the heater to the 5 gallon and have that be enough for the 5 gallon to stay warm for the puffer? Or is there another kind of small heater that is small-acrylic-tank-safe? I don't want anything that will melt the acrylic or otherwise damage the tank.

I'm considering a 5 gallon mini-bow to match the 2.5 or a 5 gallon Marineland hex if I decide to put the 5 gallon in the kitchen.
