I have a 10 watt screw-in CF bulb in mine and it's working very well so far. I have a crypt, some java fern and some bacopa in my 2.5 gallon.

Baby tears grow pretty slow without high light and Co2. Here is a picture of some in my aquavase nano.

I have a 20 watt Halogen desk lamp over my aquavase, Maybe two 20 watts over a 2.5 gallon? I would go above 20 watts because the lamps put out soo much heat.
