I've got a pair of 16-20 oz nanos that I started about a week ago. I just set them up out of boredom, no idea what to do with them yet. Right now, each has a small peice of driftwood with some java moss and @ 1" of Flourite Red. No fauna yet. I was thinking maybe a cherry shrimp, a young Endler's, or a Young Betta.
I also have several 32-50 oz planted betta bowls. Again, nothing fancy, just what I had laying around. Clippings of Sunset Hygro, Java Moss, and Rotala Indica from my big tank (1 gallon) and some Flourite Red. The bettas (1 Male and 4 Females) each enjoy their own planted home far more than their cold empty bowls.
As for lighting, I use mostly overflow from the other tanks by placing them all in close vicinity. No fast growth here, but in a nano you might not want that. In the future I plan to have a better lighting system like hanging a 36" fixture overhead. I want to start fertilizing, just haven't yet worked out the calculations. I do dose Excel at about a drop a day for the larger 50+ oz tanks.
Not sure if I answered your question, but maybe gave you some idea what I've done.
