Question JBJ Nanocube 6g - questions

Hi all -

I'm new here . I used to have 29g and 45g planted tanks but left the hobby because of the incessant algae battle that I fought (high light, no CO2 to little CO2 injection).

Anyways, I've decided to get a JBJ 6g nano-cube and house a puffer or two in it.

My questions are as follows, in order of importance:

1) Since I will have it in my bedroom, and I'm a pretty light sleeper, how QUIET is this tank? Granted the fans won't matter since they'd only be on when the lights are on, which obviously wouldn't be when I'm sleeping! I'm more concerned with the filtration noises (impeller noise, water agitation noise, etc). Will the fans come on if the blue led (moonlighting) is on during the late evening hours??

2) Since I'm embarking on a mid-high light tank (3wpg, PC lighting), I will definetly be using Seachem Flourish and Excel. However, am I looking at constant pruning, given the lighting?

3) What type of filtration media do I need to buy for the JBJ when it's time to swap it out? I know with the Eclipse 6 systems, you can use the Fluval media and it lasts MUCH longer than the standard, Marineland media for the tank.

That's all I can think of at the moment. I really like this website and forum - great gobs of information and nice people. Thanks again!

All filters should be completely silent unless there is something wrong (something in the impeller, low water level, bubbles ect) and so should this one. As long as you maintain a full tank of water you shouldnt have any water adjitation and shouldnt in the first place seeing as this is a planted tank.

If you use a lot of stem plants, yes, you will have to prune a lot. It isnt hard though and you can sell the cuttings on eBay.

You should be able to use any filter media from any company. The foam will probably be a specific size, but you should never have to replace that.

1. Stock pump SUCKS. Plan to spend extra $10-15 on Mini-Jet 404 to replace it to make the filter noiseless.
2. Flourish Excell will do just fine.
3. You can use replacement stock sponges or DIY - really a variety of options there.

1) How loud is the Mini-Jet 404?? This tank will be in my bedroom - around 5 feet from my head as I sleep and I'm a light sleeper!!

2) What about a heater? 25w or 50w? I wonder if the 3W of PC lighting will be adequate?? It can get pretty hot up in my room in the summer when the air is off! (81-82).

Thanks

I just ordered this NC6 light upgrade kit from Nanocustoms for a new fresh water planted tank that Iím setting up. http://nanotuners.nanocustoms.com/na...products_id=34
My office NC6 nano-reef tank does run warm, about 82 when the lights are on,
so I keep the heater set at 80 to keep a more consistent temp. {I used a 50 watt heater}

Mini-Jet is absolutely noiseless - in fact this is probably the most common modification among NC owners .
25W heater is suffice IMO. Lighting is also fine - just enough for a medium maintenance tank.

Is a Nanocube worth the money? Because I could get an Eclipse system for 1/2 the price.

After reading my last post, it looks like I FLAMED trckrunrmike

The NC6 is a much higher quality tank than the Eclipse 6
NC6 has a curved glass design / Eclipse 6 is cast plastic
NC6 has 18 watt power compact lighting / Eclipse 6 has a standard T-8 light
NC6 has back chambers to keep everything out of view with bio balls, ceramic rings, sponge and room for heater &/or ??? / Eclipse 6 a cartage insert
The NC6 can be used as a planted tank with the stock setup out of the box.
You can upgrade the NC6 lighting to three 18 watt power compacts = 54 watts (9 watts per gallon), if you want to spend more money.

Will I need to dose ferts BESIDES Flourish and Excel? What plants would you recommend for the lowest amount of required pruning?

Also, should I start the tank with my dwarf puffers AND the plants or just the plants for the first few weeks, then add Bio-Spira + Fish?

What kind of algae bloom problems am I looking at, on average, with one of these nanocubes??
