Question Betta Tank Help

Hi Everyone! (2nd post on planted tank...i think...woot woot!)

While I have been waiting to scrounge up enough money (poor graduate student here) to finally buy the plants for my evolve 8, I have been thinking about 'prettying' up the fiance's betta tank.

It is one of those 2 gal hex ones from Petsmart. I bought a small log of mopani wood to put in, and was thinking of either swapping out gravel for eco complete or doing eco complete with some of the gravel dispersed (its BLUE...my weakness...), adding some plants and maybe a snail and some shrimp (no clue which, suggestions on this would be helpful!!)

SO....am I doing to much for this small tank?? Or does this sound like a feasible plan?? And furthermore...any suggestions on shrimp, plants, snails??

Thanks in advance for the help!!

I have a 2.5 gallon rectangle tank on my desk at work with a beta, ghost shrimp, and ramshorn and MTS snails. You can see more in journal in my sig. Shrimp with the betta depend on how aggressive/territorial he is. Amanos might work best since they are a little larger and camouflaged more.

the ramshorns do fine when they get to be a little larger. My betta picks on them every once in a while but haven't lost any.

I have a sponge filter so if you filter it would be more doable for the betta and other critters.

you can check out my betta barracks in my sig. each chamber is under 2 gal, so you can see which plants can work well in a small tank (all those plants are doing well in low light, no CO2). i also noticed that some bettas do fine with red cherry shrimp, but many try to eat them (often fail, and the shrimp avoid them no problem, but you will rarely see them as a result). nerites are good snails to consider. here is a good place to get some: http://msjinkzd.com/species/freshwater-snails/ (msjinkzd is a member here).
