Help needed on maintenance

Hey all

Ive got a 2g spec, which was heavily planted, but at the moment it is sparingly planted.

I must admit. I took low tech and low maintenance too far. I got lazy.

And yes, the tank suffered. I unfortunately had an outbreak of hair algae from having lights on for too long, but I've got it under control now.

I'm redoing the gravel and some plants, possibly getting new driftwood, but I wanted some insight from people who have had experience with both small tanks and fluval specs.

I found I could not gravel vac, even though I did try. So naturally there is a lot of mulm or what have you under the gravel. When I pulled up an established ludwigia repens with a ton of roots, wow it looked like a nuclear mushroom cloud.

How can I avoid this? I feed sparingly now, but I didn't for some time. Is there something I actively can do to keep the gravel clean in a 6 by 6 cube with lots of plants and driftwood?

And for all you spec people, how do I keep the filter clean? And what do you do with the hole where the filter carbon would go?

I recently had to pull my filter (after a major tank clean, I noticed that moss had gotten in the bottom intake, (it's just a slit) and I removed it. 2 days later, all my shrimp went missing. Well I had no clue what happened. But I did my due diligence and when I pulled the filter, boom there were my shrimp, all stuck in the hole for the ceramic bacteria stones. The tough buggers jumped, but I rescued them and they all survived.

So yeah, it has been a nightmare recently, but I'm willing to do anything necessary to keep my tank good.

All help is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Mark

Keep up with maintanance. Ive never had a problem with my nanos. (1-3gal) using diy co2 could help with algae or dose excel. I dot know what fish you have but keep the bioload low. And idk what filter it comes with but yu van upgrade the filter im guessing. Any tank just left there with no maintaince will e entually turn yucky. Lol

While I truly appreciate your caring enough to respond, you haven't answered my questions by reaffirming I need to keep up with maintenance.

My bio load is very low

You cannot upgrade a spec filter.
