Planted 3 gallon vase

I just started a planted vase! I found out(was reminded...) that my girlfriend has a betta that has been living at her parents house for two years in a tiny little bowl, maybe a .5 gallon. So we got this larger vase, that I'm hoping will be temporary as I convince her the fish needs a larger tank.

I would love some tips on a self maintaining set up as I don't plan on having filtration. I don't mind water changes or running an airpump some if needed.

I've got a journal started in the journal section, but figured I might get some good info here...

Here is a shot of the "tank" as it is currently.

hmm, for plants you should set it up like this, with organic soil as bottom layer:

thats the setup you want to use to grow a lot of plants. lots of healthy plats in that vase means that your fish will be happiest (this is especially vital for shrimp), and the vase will not need any filter.
