Question Good filters for a nano?

Okay, yepp, I've been bitten by the aquarium bug. I was going to build a planted nano tank and house my cherry red shrimp in there. I think they'd be fun to watch breeding and floating around a tank all to themselves. When I get too many I'll send some back into my community tank to help keep it clean.

I was wondering what are some good small filters for a nano tank, I was thinking somewhere between a 3g and a 6g tank. I know I need either a sponge filter, or to alter a filter so little baby shrimplets don't get sucked up to their doom .
Could the tank also be nonfiltered? (Pretty positive I won't be doing this, but I'm always curious).

Also, I'm going to be getting some Java Moss, and some driftwood, what other plants should I look into?

Thanks everyone for your help!!!

Also, if there are any good nano full kits out there, please let me know! I can't wait to get another tank started and cycling!

Fluval makes nano tank kits. I hear the Azoo palm filters are good.

aquaclear with a sponge filter. A tank could be non filtered, but is super hard to control, maybe a few people do that, but never for a shrimp tank or a tank so small.

I figured on the filter part. Like I said, I didn't WANT to do it, but I was curious. I like the soft water sounds you get from filtered tanks. haha.

I use an Eheim 2211 on my 5.5g. On my 10g I use an AquaClear 30, but would love to use an Eheim 2213 on it. If you want a smaller tank, I'd suggest going with the Spec. Built in overflow and you can glue a piece of acrylic or plastic to the overflow strainer to make it a surface skimmer and more effective wet/dry filter. Pretty strong little outflow, too. The Innovative Marines have overflows too and look quite nice...

Ah you guys are all so wonderfully helpful.
I'm going to go to a few petstores in my area to price check everything. If I see anything really interesting that I can't locate here on the forums, I'll probably post and ask questions if anyone has the particular tank. Ahh I love phones with the internet. haha

Well! I managed a good deal while I was out wandering today. Manager at a store was yelling at an employee for taking back a tank with missing items. I glanced over to see it was a Fluval Spec Desktop. I walked over and asked the manager if she would sell it at a discount to me, as I checked and all it was missing was the filter media (Easily replaceable and sold right there for cheap).
The manager threw up her arms, and offered it to me for $30. WOO! I jumped on it, and picked up the filter media, now I am glancing at my new computer desk, realizing its not building itself, and therefore I must build it before I can put the tank on it to set it up! haha
I can't wait to get it up and cycled and to stick my shrimps in it.
