Oddly shallow 2.5 gallon... any ideas?

Was browsing around at one of the LFS (semi-local really) yesterday and made a bit of an impulse buy... an oddly-shaped 2.5 gallon tank. Inner dimensions, not including glass width and trim, are roughly 20cm long, 40 cm wide, and 12 cm deep.

I'm not really sure what I want to do with it, maybe grow one centerpiece plant emersed plus some mosses, placed in an east-facing window (with a hill behind it; it doesn't receive direct sun until later in the morning)

Are there any sort of fish or invertebrates that wouldn't be hindered by a setup so shallow, or should I stick to plants only on this one? I'm still pretty new to the hobby, so any input would be appreciated.

If you have a lid for it, you might be able to do shrimp and snails.

My roommate says I'll die by giant turtle.

A betta would probably be okay, as long as you don't put in too much substrate. A small female would probably be best, since they don't have the long fins. I had my female in a 1.5 gallon that was around 4.5 inches high with gravel for several months, and she seemed to do very well.

i agree - i want to see pics! it sounds like a neat tank. what brand? if you look up wabi kusa on here or google, there are some cool set-ups similar to what you have mentioned being interested in creating. i think a handful of cherries could be ok or maybe 1-2 amanos? fish-wise, maybe chili rasboras or endlers / guppies? i think a wabi-style "island" would look really awesome in this tank!

agreed on the wabi kusa island, but I would only keep shrimp in 2.5 gallons... a betta might have issues... A wabi kusa jungle in the middle would be awesome!

Thanks for the input so far guys; a wabi kusa setup sounds interesting, and I remember spotting at least one person in the sales section advertising them.

Micro-crabs are also under consideration; do these guys have a history of trying to escape if given the chance?

And, by popular demand... a few pics. Dad was out back doing yardwork so everything got slightly hosed and there's some grass and leaves stuck to it now, but before that everything around it was moisture-free for a day or so; leak-free thumbs up! To the person who asked about branding, judging by the workmanship around the corners I'd say this one was made by the store owner.
