I guess it's time...

This is my 'South America/Southeast Asia Jungle Biotope Thingy.' As you can see, there is no aquascaping skill involved and the whole setup was (still sorta is) suffering from a state of complete and total neglect and disrepair.

The poor inhabitants of this slime-pool have, over time and in their own various numbers, included:

Amano shrimp
crayfish
red-claw crabs
apple snails
pond snails
Malaysian trumpet snails
ramshorn snails
orange-belly newts
tadpoles
common carp
channel catfish
smallmouth bass
bull trout
rainbow trout
speckled dace
mottled sculpin
bumblebee gobies
silvertip catfish
silver dollars
silver flying foxes
Siamese algae eaters
Chinese algae eaters
emerald cories
julii cories
bronze cories
kuhli loaches
common plecos
rubberlip plecos
bristlenose plecos
otocinclus
checkerboard cichlids
golden dwarf acaras
flag acaras
red-breasted acaras
Honduran red point cichlids
keyhole cichlids
angelfish
German blue rams
Bolivian rams
cockatoo cichlids
blue-cheek cichlids
convict cichlids
discus
tiger barbs
cherry barbs
gold barbs
zebra danios
harlequin rasboras
narrow-wedge rasboras
Australian rainbowfish
turquoise rainbowfish
dwarf gouramis
neon tetras
black neon tetras
glowlight tetras
pristella tetras
silvertip tetras
serpae tetras
black skirt tetras
Buenos Aires tetras
redeye tetras
endlers
guppies
swordtails
mollies
hatchetfish
Rachovii killies

Guess what my favorite out of them all is...?

The tank specs are, at the moment:

55 gallon glass tank

Marineland Emperor 400

Odyssea T5HO 4x54watt 6,500K light fixture

Marineland 200watt heater

Substrate:

play sand

creek (yes, out of a creek) gravel

creek (yes, out of a creek) sand

...and a hand(bucket)ful or two of other substrates I put in a while back

Flora: Red ludwigia

amazon swords

flame swords

chain swords

some sort of crypt

green cabomba

some sort of val

duckweed

...and a couple other stragglers that are getting choked out (like the party-pooping anubias)

Fauna:

2 Amano shrimp

Pair or Bolivian rams

4 stunted discus

17 narrow-wedge rasboras (leftovers; there were 21)

3 otocinclus (leftovers; there were 10)

1 BN pleco (hateful poop-maker will be swapped for a rubberlip here soon)

1 flying fox that is way too big for his britches, the goof (he needs some pals)

Water quality and parameters:

Nitrate: 0.05 ppm

Nitrite: 0.00 ppm

Ammonia: 0.00 ppm

81˚F

Fertilization and care regime:

Water change: 50% twice a week

2 DIY CO2 size 2-liter, refilled once every 2 weeks

Seachem's Comprehensive once weekly

Seachem's Trace twice weekly

Feeding regime:

Omega One color flakes once a week

Seaveggies seeweed flakes once a week

New Life Spectrum mini cichlid pellets once a week

Hikari's frozen daphnia, spirulina, brine shrimp, bloodworms, mysis shrimp, tubifex worms, and marine mix (hey, the fish like it) taking turns being fed twice a day every day (this part of the diet is for the discus. They are target-fed with a medicine-dropper, and let me assure you all: no food goes uneaten)

Now, for the picture! Not the best, as it's in dire need of a water change and a little cleaning up here and there, but would you believe I trimmed this tank just a week and a half ago??? The before and after comparison was shocking!

your stunted discus are gorgeous xD
they look like they've got some peppering going on (which i consider a bonus), is that accurate? or are they wild-type?

i like wild jungle-looking tanks, i dunno. really nice, if it's as neglected as you say! (i was scared, i almost thought your list of previous inhabitants was the current stocklist o_o)

Love the jungle look, too! Very nice looking tank. Which plant is growing to the top and curving over the surface?

Thanks. It's not every day those big-eyed, football-shaped discus get a compliment!

That would be the vallisneria spiralis.
