Fluval 5gal CHI - Strip, rebuild, enjoy

Well that's the plan anyway. I've had some fish death since my ADF's decided to spew eggs all over the place. Even after doing daily changes, to get the ammonia out, I wound up with a dead betta, followed by two dead snails. Made me think it's time to upgrade the crappy stock stuff. I'll list out what I'm planning and have some questions.

Setup:
Fluval 5gal CHI Tank, removing filter clamp.
Aquaclear 20
submersible heater 25W
DIY acrylic lid
Exoxotic EcoPeco LED

Substrate: flourite sand

Plants: dwarf sag carpet, some moss, still undecided.
Hardscape: Rocks, manzanita,

First question is, is the aquaclear 20 too much filter? Would a sponge filter be better?

Second. if I decide to move the frogs to another tank, is there any setup that would better work for both.

Edit: added lighting.

Thanks,
Leo

I use the Aqua Clear 20 on my 5gal chi. I thinkit's just fine. The flow is adjustable. I'll put mine full blast sometimes just to stir up the water most of the time it's set to almost the lowest setting. I have CRS, CPDs and a Stiphodon in my tank.
IMHO the sponge would take too much room in the tank.

I run a Aquaclear 20 on my stripped chi with a fluval edge prefilter. I run it fullblast, because I have a pretty heavy plant mass in there with my shrimp and found if I run it on lower settings, the bottom water isnt circulated as well.

Sorry that it's sideways! Didn't look that way in my phone.

This is just a quick shot of it up and running.. having problems with uprooting since there's not much substrate in there. Going to fix that and get some plants that I haven't trimmed out of my other tank
