Figuring out the 5 gallon.

So I have finally decided to go ahead and start my 5 gallon divided Betta tank planted.

I now have to figure out how to do it!

Fluval stratum substrate
2x 15 watt cfl lights
Red sea nano filter
50 watt heater

Does that sounds right? Or should I go with flourite, only 1x 15 watt bulb, DIY co2 etc etc...

I plan on growing a mixture of medium and low demanding plants.

That light will be ok, as long as they dose enough co2 or have enough plants to use it. Otherwise it will be an algae farm! But I do agree on the heater. Unless it has a built in thermostat, it will most likely overheat the tank.

I've had this heater running for years, on both my 5 gallons. It's a pre set heater.

What I have running on the tank since setup is one 15 watt cfl, and that's without any live plants, haven't a problem which is why I though more light. Haha

I have a 50W heater in my 5G and I feel it's too big for it. You could get away with a 25W for sure (I'm switching to a 25W eventually)

Who would have thought that plants like dirt?!

Oh, then it will be fine if it's preset.

I can't get a lower wattage heater here, and wouldn't want to, even as it is I am switching my heater to a 50 watt that is adjustable since all the preset ones only keep my water to 74 max.
Anyways, heater is no problem.
I'm mainly curious about the substrate.
And what you guys run with your 5 gallon plantededs.

I use 2x15 watt CLF's on mine. However, I don't have any reflectors in mine, and I have a critter cage top on mine.

I don't use any heater as I had one fail and destroy the tank. I believe it was 50 watt, don't remember. I know it was the smallest I could find. It stuck on when I was out of town and the water was over 95 degrees. I decided I just will not run heaters on tanks this small again.

Here is my journal if you are interested, I don't update it a lot nor is it in my sig. You get a good idea of what I am doing- https://www.plantedtank.net/forums/pl...nce-dutch.html

Okay, so I went out and bought one 8.8 Ibs bag of fluval plant stratum.
And have decided to go with only the one 15 watt cfl lamp for now and add another lamp if one is not enough in the end.

Just because they were suffering doesn't mean lack of co2 was the problem. I have gotten many plants to grow under a 13w bulb in my 5g without co2. Ferts are more important. You really only need co2 if you have a lot of light.

What plants are you planning to grow? Good choice with the stratum.

I'm not quite sure yet! Haha
Deffinitly some dwarf hair grass and am hoping I have a bit of luck with it this time...
As well as some java fern, anubuas, and lotus.
However i am also looking for other plant ideas if you have any?
