Just another 10 Gallon....

Hola.

I guess these things start with a bit of an intro?? Ok then...the name's Randi. I draw on people for a living.

Now that that's done and out of the way.

I had a small 10 gallon converted into an AIO with a display of about 7 gallons that housed a pair of Yashia Gobies and a small reef forever ago. Then I started travelling with work and eventually sold everything off, but kept the tank. I went for about a year with no aquarium. And then the bug hit again.

So I ordered a bunch of stuff online, set up a tank in my station at the shop and everything was kosher. Or so I thought.

Although it was looking decent I wasn't happy with the over all space it allowed for any future fish...so. I went out and picked up another 10 gallon. And overhauled.

skip ahead 3 or so weeks and this is where I'm at now:

Specs
Standard 10 gallon aquarium
2x 13W Philips "Daylight" bulbs in clamp lamp domes, approx 12 hours a day
Aqua Clear 30 with just Sponge and bio media, no carbon
Some other HOB filter than came with the tank, stocked with just extra sponges.
50W heater

Flora
I'm probably way off, but this is what the tag thingers said when I bought them:
Java Moss
Some random Moss Ball thing
Hygrophila corymbosa
Crypt (both wendtii and parva)
Anubias
Bacopa australis
And then a whole bunch of other ones that fall into the "looked cool, lets try it category"

Ferts
Flourite Substrate
Flourish, Excel, Iron, Trace, Potassium and Complete. Follows a hacked up version of the schedule offered by Seachem.

Fauna
2x Ottocinclius
6x Corydora hastatus (or however its spelled)
12x Celebese Rice Fish
12x Red Cherry Shrimp (not including babies I've seen darting around/chillin)

Now with work I travel quite a bit, so the tank needs to be fairly self sustained while I'm gone. Feedings can be handled by friends/family (I've got a few fellow fish nerds in the family, they'll know how much/when/what to feed) Lights are on a timer and I'm currently in the process of ordering/installing an auto top off which will pump water from a separate 10 gallon tote up into the display when needed.

Oh...that other tank???? yeah, it's getting set up as a low tech/lowlight display as well....

thoughts? comments? suggestions?

Thanks! I'm *trying* to patiently let this one grow in...rather than just buy more plants....it sucks.

is it possible that my plants are pearling and I"m just not seeing it on the leaves??? I've got tiny little bubbles on the top of my tank, that when viewed looking up from gravel level seem to cover a good chunk of the tank? All the fish are doing fine, the rice fish are starting to show a gorgeous blue sheen with yellow highlights on the belly, and I'm pretty sure a few of the shrimp are carrying eggs.....

soooooo, went for fish food (adding variety to the diet is always good)
left LFS with more plants and some CPDs...forgot fish food.

Picked up some Glossostigma elainoides, Pogostermon stellata and some random plant that again falls into the "looks cool" category.

Weekly post water change update:

Nothing new really, plants are growing pretty well. Re-scaped a bit...got rid of the Anubias because it just didn't seem to fit with everything else in the tank. The tall green thing in the middle is growing like crazy, and the new growth has a red tinge to it? Anyways, trimmed and re-planted the trimmings, moved the Bacopa to a spot that once it grows a bit taller I think will really look good. The P. stellata is quickly becoming one of my favorite plants in the tank..and the fish seem to really dig the heavy planting on the one side and a bit of room on the right with the driftwood.

The shrimp are bright and active, I see molts regularly, so must be doing something right. They all seem to chill out in the plants and on the drift wood, but come out for feeding....

Figured I'd type out what I was using for a dosing regimen....any tips, suggestions etc would be appreciated.

Monday
: Top up water (1 drop Prime)
Flourish (1mL)
Flourish Excel (1mL)
Flourish Iron (1mL)

Tuesday: Top up water (1 drop Prime)

Wednesday: 30% Water Change (4 drops Prime)
Flourish (1mL)
Flourish Excel ( cap)
Flourish Iron (1mL)
Flourish Comprehensive (1mL)

Thursday: Top up water (1 drop Prime)
Flourish Trace ( cap)
Flourish Iron (1mL)

Friday: Top up water (1 drop Prime)
Flourish Potassium (2mL)
Flourish Excel (1mL)
Flourish Iron (1mL)

Saturday: Top up water (1 drop Prime)
Flourish Trace ( cap)
Flourish Excel (1mL)
Flourish Iron (1mL)

Sunday: Top up water (1 drop Prime)
Flourish Excel (1mL)
Flourish Iron (1mL)
Flourish Comprehensive (1mL)

I should clarify that the top ups are not a substantial ammount...maybe a cup or two at most...but I can be a bit picky when it comes to certain things...and then completely lazy when it comes to others, but that's neither here nor there.

The tall green thing as in the one left of the sponge? It's probably Ludwigia. Probably arcuata because of the needle-like leaves. Also, welcome to the Planted Tank hobby. One piece of advice- be prepared for snails.

ha ha it's definitely Ludwigia...just no idea what type

I've seen a few snails in there, even though I tried to get rid of any snails that were on the plants when I got them...what gets rid of them but won't mess up the tank? I'd like to stop them from taking over before they start...

Once you get the snails, it's really hard to get rid of them. Just put zucchini in the tank. The snails will crawl all over the zucchini, then you fish (no pun intended) them out of the tank. Repeat as many times as necessary. Eventually the adult snails will be gone so more baby snails can't pop up.

To prevent snails from coming back just fill a bucket with 19 Parts water to 1 part bleach. Swirl the plants in the bucket for about 30 seconds, rinse them under the sink, and put them in a container with 10x the amount of water conditioner that you need. This neutralizes the harmful chlorine in bleach. Then you're all set for planting

tried just raising the temperature for a few days, and today added a SUPER diluted dose of salt. Hoping it wont harm the plants/inverts too much.

so I was sick almost all of last week, and was unable to do a water change or dose anything really.
Today did a 30% water change and trimmed/re-scaped:
