lighting in a eclipse 6

Well, its not realy an eclipse 6, it's a wallmart brand Regent 5, made by marineland...I wonder if they just changed the name so it wouldnt offend fish store owners by selling at walmart?

Anyway, its the standard eclipse set up, 5g. normal shape. It included a 8watt T-5 full spectrum bulb. My question is, is this adaquate to sustain or mabey even grow some plants? I am not too concerned with going high tech, this is just a side tank that is being used as a spawning tank for blue rams and just want it to look nice and provide cover. I may be willing to retrofit a 13watt compact flourescent in there if anyone has a link to a good how to page.

Let me know what you think of the possibilities of this tank.

Thanks,

Kevin

growing plants is possible in that tank but a very slow process. 13 watt retofit with a reflector will give you slightly better results.

I have a link in my sig to my 6 gal eclipse so you can see that its not impossible to get a decent low light setup.

I'm thinking of also upgrading my lighting to 1 or maybe even 2 13 watt PC lights in the furture. But so far I'm happy with the setup.

good luck with your tank.

I also have this setup and tryed after i saw it done here. Plants wont die, but growth is very slow. Crypts grow well with this set up i think, They seem to be the only ones that I can actually see growing day to day. Most anubius will do well too and of course your basic ferns and mosses.

This is where I got the lights for my "w-mart "eclipse

Try these but make sure you get the reflector as well, I forgot the first time around and was astounded when I installed it afterwards.

Zach987, so you are saying you have installed an ahsupply kit in the eclipese? Did you use any kind of cover for the lights, or anything to prevent moisture?

yeah I installed them, no cover was needed, the lights are water resistant as they are but a good layer of weather-proofing tape set me at ease with them being in the enclosed area. A year later, nothing has been damaged or rusted and my plants are loving life.
