Paul's 20 gallon tank

Hello,

It all started about seven months ago with the construction of a lighting hood and table. Some carpentry, some wiring, taking apart a bunch of lamps and playing with ballasts...it was the sort of project that appeals to me. The fact that I'd end up putting a tank in there was alsmost a secondary consideration. Later I learned that having a tank with plants in it is a pretty cool, too.

I can't really claim to know a lot about planted tanks. Mostly I just get plants that I think look cool and throw them in the tank. Some things have died, but most of the plants seem to be doing quite well. I'm especially happy with the Crinum, which has more than tripled in size since I bought it and is now the "centrepiece" of the tank. It is touching all four corners of the tank now.

So without further ado, here is my tank, at seven months.

Thanks for taking a look. Also, if you are interested you could check out the harrowing tale of my purchase of an Angioclimax collossum here.

VERY nice. Your algae ball has a cleft. What's the story there? It's like the beginning stage of cell division.

Wow! That Crinum is AWESOME! Easily one of my favorite plants. What is fert regemine? Does it get root tabs? So far mine seems to be thriving in it's Eco/gravel substrate and water column ferts, but I'd like to know if I should do MORE!!!

Nice tank!

Okay....

I had never thought about the cleft in the algae ball before. I think maybe it's always been like that. Maybe it is dividing into two algae balls and it's just taking it's sweet time about it. It's the only algae ball I have ever had...I just assumed they were all like that.

For nutrients, every six days or so I add about 5 litres of water to top up the tank. There is no fertilizer in that, but I read somewhere that straight tap water is pretty good for adding nutriets, provided you add it often enough. (I just considered the math on that: that means I am losing almost a litre a day to evaporation. That can't be right. Can it? Hmm.

Then every three weeks or so I do a one-half water change. At that time I add:
~5ml Kent Botanica Fe Iron supplement
~15ml Plant Gro NPK 0.6-0.3-2.4
~10ml Seachem Flourish Nitrogen supplement
~5ml Kent Botanica Grow multinutrient solution

That's it for fertilizer. No root tabs or anything.

As for critters, I have:
7 or 8 assorted algae-eating shrimp. Maybe less. They are hard to find.
2 Siamese Algae eaters
1 Yellow Algae eater
1 mystery algae eater
3 er...tertras. Threadfin yellow rainbow somethingorother-I-forget tetras. They are nice though.
and far too many unwanted snails.

that's it!
