Does a shrimp bowl need soil??

Really thinking of starting one of these, just wanted to know one thing:

Do I need to have some sort of potting soil below the gravel? Or will the plants grow just as well with regular fertilizer?

Plants would do fine with root tabs and or column dosing. But then you couldn't treat it like a walstad bowl.

Plant tanks and grow well.

I highly recommend for you to use the soil as your fert source for growing plants, but it can be done w/o it - just regular root tabs and such... IMO it is very simple with soil.
