So i just completed a little mod on my SPEC. What i wanted to do was keep little shrimp from getting filtered when i get them, and create a surface skimmer So this is what my tank looks like! Notice the little peace of blue in the filter inlet? And sorry for the cheesy iPhone pics..
All i did was cut up a deli meat lid so it looked a little bit like this.
Now keep in mind that all the demensions are basic. the bigger the slot the more flow from the surface. Just make sure it covers all the slots, and you could even make it go all the way to the bottom so you dont have to fill your gravel past that little inlet on the bottom that also eats little shrimplets! All you do is slip it between the black plastic wall and the foam pad! you could even heat glue it in place (but thats a little experimental) i like being able to adjust it for this reason...
The water level in the display is higher than that in the back, i like this because it runs the water onto and through the pad instead of just pooling back there. Do you guys think this is better? Just don't run the water so low back there it will hurt the heater if you have one! So what do y'all think? Thoughts greatly appriciated!

You can check my spec out. The tenellus has grown too much so I put it into my 15 gallon.
