First Nano 2.5 g... Experimental

Hi, first i would like to introduce myself. My name is Axel, and I live in Cancún, México, so I apologize if sometimes my english is not that good. I am 24 and I´ve always been into plants and animals, so when I saw all the beautiful tanks full of life that you guys make, I decided to give it a shot.

I call it experimental because here in Cancun, it impossible to find aquatic moss, nobody sells it. The only thing i find here is land moss and I had to collect it. Surely I could order moss from somewhere else, but first I wanted to try and adapt this "land moss" to be underwater.

I put it together last Wednesday. I have a small waterfall filter and used liquid Carbon instead of CO2. Also I used a plant fertilizer, so the moss have strength and resist. After a couple of days I put inside a couple of shrimps and they´ve been doing great so far. They loved the mini-cave under that rock. (I´ll get better pics)

The moss looks very good, it has grown this past few days and it seems that its going to make it. The light I´m using right now is a ReptiGlo 5.0 I already had, but i´ll change it soon.

The first picture is from the day I planted it. The other two are from last Saturday when I added the shrimps. Any advice or criticism will be accepted, as I am beginning and want to keep learning.

Saludos,

Axel

That looks great how you have it!

As for the moss, I'm quite sure you can purchase some moss from someone here and they would ship it to you, just not sure how much that would cost to get to you.

Thanks Orchidman, I have my fingers crossed on this. The moss have grown a bit, It´s almost a week and I haven´t seen any darkening or dying areas in the moss, but to tell you the truth, I have no idea on how long it take to drown it haha... so it is still a mystery.
I will update every week so we all can see the progress (or failure hehe)

Saludos

Hello Jedimasterben, thanks for your comment and advice, but i think the cost of somebody sending me the moss is going to be really high. I´ve seen different mosses for sale in Mexico, and probably I will get some soon, but I really want to see if this works, because.. well... free moss hehe...

Love it! Hope it does well for you - you really never know with moss! Only thing I can think of to consider is ... where you got the moss, did the moss there get full sun? Or dappled? Or full shade? I'd bet it would be the light that will be the clincher rather than the moisture.

Hi Axel, welcome to the board! The tank is looking great- please do keep us updated. I got away from the Nano Tanks, but I sure had fun when I had my 3 gallon.

See you around!

Nah, shouldn't be too much. Sending a small flat rate box from the US postal service to Mexico is only $12, and you can fit a lot of moss in one!

You never know you may find the next big thing(moss). I am sure most mosses were originally land based and people just decided to try them out in an aquarium.

Wow, I thought it would be more expensive. I´ll look into it. Thanks!

I hope! If I succeed, I am going to do some research to know exactly what kind of moss is it and write a bit about the experience.

if this kind of moss doesnt work, then try to find moss that grows around very wet areas and near streams or rivers, that type of moss might do better.

Speaking of moss, I was at my creek yesterday and I found some really long moss. Looks like weeping moss. I want to get some next time i go down there and see how it does underwater.
