Question about Fluval Spec

hi....it's been a long time since i've posted here....but i have a question, and maybe you guys can help me

so i got a spec recently....and am planning on putting some kind of shirmp in it. so on the back panel at the top there are vents....to allow the water to enter the back of the tank, where the media is...then get pumped out again. also at the bottom there is a tiny little hole that does the same thing.

i don't have a pic right now....i might try to get one later to explain better. but my question is, how would i prevent the little shrimpers from getting sucked in? especially the bottom little hole. if anyone else has a spec, then you know what i'm talking about. i've been trying to brainstorm about something i could put over the hole...but i'm not coming up with anything. help please! thank you

Try attaching a piece of black filter foam over the vents with small zip ties, i dont think you'll have to worry about the one at the bottom how small is that hole?

I want a spec so bad I can't stand it.

seank- the filter foam sounds like a good idea. and since it'd be black, you couldn't see it. well the hole on the bottom is small, but big enough for a shrimp to fit through. i suppose i could get some filter wool and stuff it? but then would that interfere with the flow of the water? i mean it wouldn't totally block it, but would slow the flow of water down.

dave-h- well i definitely like it! it's so cute. i have a little piece of wood, that a small piece of java fern is tied to. i'll also be tying moss to it. and i have to small anubias plants so far. that's all i have done for now. i dn't really want to overwhelm such a small space with too many plants, so i thought i'd start out with only a few plants. i hope you get one!

I have the spec and love it for it's tiny'ness as well... I also added black filter foam over the vents for the sake of my shrimp and it wedges in nicely with no support - its 1/2 thick and the length of the vents.

uh oh, I missed those holes - I think my substrate must cover it because I don't see any but the back is pretty heavily planted

I would do the same can cover it with the black foam. Good news is that the few shrimp/snails that did get back their before I put the foam on were easily fished out with a small net during a water change.

I have 5 CRS in mine as it is the coolest tank in the house (under an AC vent in my bedroom on my night stand and so far day or night it runs 74-75 degrees. The CRS have only been it for a few days now but I started it about 2 weeks ago with media, gravel and a filter from my 20g tank and is packed with plants. So far the water parameters have been very stable. You should be able to see under a recent thread called Show me your Spec's.

Its nice to see a few more folks with them posting pictures. Do take some when you can, I'd love to see it!

oh even better! i was wondering about trying some CRS. i have RCS and have had snowball and ghost shrimp. so i feel like i'm not a novice shimper haha.

i have the fluval shrimp statum in mine....but i don't have a ton of it, because that little hole is visible at the bottom. i have a piece of wood, 2 small anubias and will be getting some moss this week to tie on the wood, along with a small piece of java fern. i will def takes pics when i get everything in.

i will look at the thread about the spec. i'm curious what people keep in theirs. the other forum i belong to....most people don't have the cool little nano tanks, like they do over here. thanks for the tips...you've been really helpful!

I vote for CRS's. This is my first try at them (10 wee ones) 5 in the Spec and 5 in my 20T. I think the 20 is a bit too warm for them right now I hope the spec does them better. Pictures! Pictures! No need to wait till its ultra pretty - the fun part is seeing them evolve over the months and sometimes years. Come on you know you want to share!
