Starting a 5 gallon - ideas??

Hi all,

I'm starting a 5 gallon planted tank for cultivating ramshorn and pond snails as feeders for my puffer - I have a 1.5 gallon which has housed the snails up till now, but my tank sitter has reported that they have quit reproducing and the pickings are getting rather slim. So I'm upgrading to 5 gallons and it has been reccomended that I do a planted tank rather than a bare bottomed tank.

I've never done a planted tank before. What kind of substrate should I use and what type of plants? I have a fluorescent light fixture for a 10 gallon over it, but I don't know if I have the right kind of bulb in it. Whatever the case I can get a bulb designed with plants in mind.

The main purpose of the tank is for breeding snails, not for looks. Any ideas or hint would be appreciated
