Rules that are broken/amended when going from norm to nano?

So, let's pretend I mostly know when I'm doing when it comes to a successful planted tank. I accept that this is a big assumption, lol..

I want to set up a small (2 to 5 gallon) 'nano' planted tank in my workspace, and find myself wondering:

What conventions that work in larger tanks need modification to have a successful nano?

I would wager ferts, co2, and water changes are pretty linear along tank volume... what about lighting, substrate, and filtration? Something tells me that the smaller water volume results in a less forgiving array of windows-of-not-killing-everything-ranges.

Less of everything... Light, CO2, ferts, bioload, etc. That's all I can think of at the moment.

Lighting definitely. ADA setups have 27watts on 3 gallon. Which is 9 WPG. There are also less light choices mostly CFL and now LED.

You need more light than you might think, and larger more frequent water changes.

^ I have a 20l and a fluval edge. As you said about ferts/co2 are pretty much linear. However, every week when I do my water changes I noticed that the water in the smaller 6 gallon fluval edge is always much more acidic. I feed both tanks and fert them the same (proportionally) so I'm guessing that a smaller tank can easily have dramatic changes.
