A couple weeks ago I scored a new-in-the-box Fluval EDGE at Goodwill for $12.99 (!) It looks like the perfect setup for my desk at work.
So. I set the Edge up on Saturday. The night before I rinsed Dark Red Florite and mixed it with a little Eco-complete black. I chose the color to reflect the brick walls here--it's a restored downtown loft.
Dragged all my tank stuff to work and have the substrate in place and water flowing. Using plain old polyester filter fiber in the filter until what remains of the florite dust is filtered out or settles.
There is some seasoned gravel from my established tank mixed in and I put a beginning dose of Seachem Excel and Seachem Fluorish in along with the water conditioner. Once it warms a bit I'll put the bacterial primer in.
The goal is to run a non-altered tank straight out of the box using crypts, java, and whatever other low light plant comes my way. My co-worker has never done a planted set up and this is sort of a demonstration in progress.
Monday-- I changed the water due to the tannins from the wood piece and put 2 crypts, some moss, and a java fern in place. Even in such a small tank I see I'll want more plants, but that's what I've got for now.
So far it's just been bust-out FUN
! Pix when the dust settles....
