Ick that floats..

So both of my nano's now have this disgusting film floating on the top of the water. I can stir it up and it makes its way to the bottom or congeals on the sides of the tank but I can come back a couple of hours later and there it is again. It's really quite foul looking to see that layer of filth on the top. Any ideas what it is and how to make it go away? The one tank has a canister filter, the newer bowl has nothing.. it's a free-for-all in there.

It might be protein film. Usually can be taken care of by increasing your surface agitation.

Protein film. The only way to get rid of it is to get mollies or surface agitation.

Nothing Ventured. Nothing Gained.

I use a clear large plastic cup, like the ones a cut pineapple comes in, and skim it off. What size tank, what filtration, and how stocked is it? What are you feeding? Bloodworms tend to add a lot of film.

Its a small 4 gallon nano. It has been running for a few weeks without a problem. This seems to have shown up out of the blue. I have a canister filter hooked up running to it. The only thing in it right now is a few shrimp and an olive nerite snail. I am not really feeding excessively and the tank is not overly planted with dying plants all over. I think I may start more frequent water changes to see if that helps although the water is clear. I did notice this morning though some tiny swimming white buggers that are too tiny to identify. That did not give me a warm fuzzy feeling..
