5 Gallon Planted tank cycle “new to this”

I started cycling my 5 gallon about a week and a half ago, I’ve used API quick start and even got cycled sponge filters from a local shop to help. Currently still seeing ammonia and very high nitrites. How long until my cycle is done am I doing this right?.

Hey Markking,

Yes, patience is the name of the game when cycling. Take a breath, trust the process.

Caveat; If you have fish (you care about) in the tank already, you can't snooze, you have to keep the ammonia and nitrite levels low enough that they don't poison your fish. Test your water frequently and PWC appropriately so your fish don't get sick and die, also so you can follow what's going on with the cycle.

If you have no fish in the system, IMO, have a cup of tea and chill let the cycle do it's work. Still a good idea to keep testing and weekly PWC. You need ammonia and nitrite in the system to feed your budding BB colony.

Here are some links to some great cycling basics from this site:

In my experience stable cycling cannot happen in a week even with seeded media, and silver bullet products claiming instant cycle are BS, so it's not your fault that it hasn't happened yet.

Cheers!
