So I decided to setup a new nano tank for shrimp, low tech, hopefully low maintenance. I’ve been getting stuff in every now and then for the last couple weeks. I’ve never done a series of posts from zero to cycled to done, so I thought I’d try it out.

I bought a lifegard rimless tank, little over 5 gallons, UNS substrate to plant in, some sand to surround the planted area, sponge filter and a new supposed-to-be-quiet-airpump.

I’ll update as things progress over the next few weeks. Hope it all goes according to plan, and input is always welcome.

Here’s my other tank, 20 gallon planted, I had a 40 tall, but it was too hard to deal with, so I broke it down and started all over again. This one is using CO2, which I want to avoid in my nano.

Beautiful little tank. Looking forward to seeing how it goes for you. I am debating doing a similar shrimp tank

I may come across as a know-it-all. In reality, I have no idea.

This video is my inspiration, although he plants it different than I would like to, the hardscape is really nice.

Boiling some hardscape for the tank. Rocks from northern Cali beaches, according to my mother in law rock collector. Ordering plants so I can start building this coming week.

Roughing the hardscape. Some foam is just to prevent falling, and I’m sure something will change once the substrate and sand start to fill it in.

Hardscape in place. Mostly. Once I start planting I’ll add gravel and smaller stones to make it a little more natural. As much as I think the shrimp like the substrate exposed I think sand over it all will look nicer... I’ll just have to see how it looks when the grasses start going in. Photos won’t load, exceeded my attachment size, I’ll edit and retry below, anyhow...

So far I have:
Lifegard nano tank
Fluval nano plant light
Ultum Nature substrate (1 L)
Sand from a LFS
FOUND ROCKS
Aqueon heater
Amazon cheap sponge filter
Zidee air pump

Plants on the way...

Some plants added. Doing a dry start so the taller plants will wait, I’ve never done this before so I don’t want the taller heavier plants to melt.

So the dry start didn’t last long, things were yellowing and curling, so in the water went. A slow process where I added gravel and rocks throughout the day. I think it came together nice. A little less island and a little more rock river through the middle, but nice from all three sides and I think pretty natural looking. Hope you like the look!
