In theory it's too much red. In actuality it looks very nice! Goes to show some rules are meant to be broken

My first thought was that the left side island was sticking out alone too much (sort of ‘placed’ there), and needed something behind it to imitate depth and connection or flow. I found myself staring at it more, though, and now I wouldn’t ask for any change - it’s interesting as is, and makes me want to keep looking at it. I think the picture doesn't do the tank justice, I’d love to see this one in person and see the scape from more angles. This probably looks best from the left a bit, with the right-side setup a little behind the left. How’s it positioned in the room?

The plants look amazing, and well groomed. The overload of red is seriously attention-grabbing. Golden Pencilfish? Those are nice, and may show a bit of schooling even in a small tank with few fish. Do I see Oto in there, too? That’s a good community mix, I think.

So my only ‘complaint’ is the tank itself (HA!). This layout (and the nice glassware, etc.) deserves a low iron rimless tank. Why go all low budget there?

Very nice.

I can only grow plants when they're completely under water. Everything else is doomed.

Thank you for all the comments. I actually had rotala green in the aquascape originally but I decided to add rocks to the aquascape so I took out the rotala green added the lava rock and then began to transplant some of the rotala mini pink stems to behind the rocks. Proteus’s comments are dead on as the rotala by itself was out there for a different aquascape. I was planning on removing it when the rotala behind the rocks grew in and just have hairgrass there, but I like the plant so much I don’t have the heart to get rid of it. I thought about the more expensive aquarium as well, many times! Thank you all again, John

Have to agree that you gotta go rimless. It will elevate any future scapes you create.

Love it just exactly as you have it. Its very striking.
I also dont mind that it isn't rimless. I mean if you are going to be entering competitions, sure- but, if not- what you have is fine/.

180 g. low tech w/ wild South American cichlids, corydoras eques, and African Congo riverine tetras.
60 g. low tech w/ F1 Alenquer discus pair and wild Altum Angels
30 g. low tech - Breeding tank
30 g. low-tech Shrimp tank - wild-type neocaradina and Caridina cf. babaulti "Zebra"
9 gallon Shrimp tank- Caridina cantonensis ("Golden Bee's"). *Tank still at cycling stage.
