2.5 gallon filtration

I'm thinking about setting up a 2.5 gallon cube with inert sand, the Up Aqua Pro LED Light 3C and an airstone for water movement/oxygenation. I'm planning to change 50% of the water once a week, minimum. Planned stocked is a betta and dwarf water lilies; I may try some other plants, but I want to leave the betta plenty of swimming space.

I'm trying to figure out what filtration option is the best fit. Would a small sponge work best, or something like the Finnex Pure-5/Azoo Mignon HOB. My last option was to rely on the airstone and water changes.

I have a similar tank with a small female betta. I'm using a tiny corner sponge filter and doing a 50% water change weekly. So far so good, the betta seems to be enjoying the environment. All I have is an Anubia and Mopani wood for decor, not taking up much space.

I would think a small air lift sponge would be just fine. It’ll do the water movement, break surface tension, and help contain particulates, all while being the easiest filter to maintain ever.
Keep an eye on your betta’s behavior to know if the output is too much or pointed where it shouldn’t, or if the location should change.
Share pics of your work in progress, please. I love new tank setups, to see what someone creates.

I can only grow plants when they're completely under water. Everything else is doomed.

I have an Azoo Mignon 150 in my UNS 20C, which contains 2.2 gallons and it isn't too much flow for a Betta, though a Mignon 60 probably would be a better fit. I modified the filter by throwing out the cartridge and replacing it with a chunk of Fluval BioFoam.

I used a older version of this in a 2.5 it worked well for a Betta and some dwarf frogs and the price is good. https://m.drsfostersmith.com/product...21&pcatid=9821
