Hello, very new to the hobby and first post.

Hello there, my name is Paul and I am very new to the hobby with 2 questions to start, any input is greatly appreciated.

1. I live in the desert so even at this time of year we run hot. 10g tank with heater not running is reading 85.3, I guess the therm could be off but if not how do i reduce the heat?

2. I bought 5 ghost shrimp but 1 looks quite different are these different species.

Run a fan blowing over the water, which should reduce the temps by a few degrees.

It looks like you might have a Gordian Knot or Horsehair worm parasitizing your ghost shrimp. They do reproduce in water so it would probably be safest for your other shrimps and kindest to the suffering infected shrimp to kill it and dispose of it (it will die eventually because the worm growing inside of it is feeding on it). Easiest method to do this is by taking the shrimp and enough aquarium water to cover it into a disposable cup or container with a lid and putting it in your freezer until it's solid, then toss it.

Warning for the squeamish: The worm might come out and thrash around if the shrimp is handled or killed in normal water, which is why I suggested freezing it. They cannot hurt humans though. The Gordian worms are more well known for infecting grasshoppers and crickets in nature.
