newbie - 5 gallon

I jumped into this without thoroughly researching first, and now need advice on if i'm going on the right track.
I have one 5 gallon tank that I'm currently cycling (using ammonium chloride) with five plants and one nerite snail. I plan to add one betta fish as soon as the tank is cycled. Tank also contains a piece of driftwood, a box-shaped decor piece, and a rock. I'm using a regular over-the-side filter and have it heated to 78*F.
I regretfully did not keep track of the types of plants I bought; if anyone's a plant enthusiast and wants to help identify them or at least let me know if my tank looks stable I would be more than appreciative.
Right now I have a generic large-ish gravel substrate but I just ordered some plant soil ( that I'm planning to add. I also ordered some Seachem Florish ( and will start adding that as directed as soon as it comes in the mail. I just read that CO2 levels are important; is this something you guys keep track of? Which kit is good to measure levels? Is API CO2 additive a good product? (this one here - Are there any other parameters I should worry about?
I don't really care as much about aesthetic, I just want to know if I'm track to have a healthy tank.
