9 gallon nano tank - maturing nicely

My 34L Fluval Flex nano tank is 3 months down the line and coming along nicely. It is planted using TMC Nutrasoil Brown and currently thriving are 3 Java Fern Narrow Leaf, 2 Anubias Nana, 3 Crypt Wendtii and a clump of Java Moss. Livestock are Embers, Neons, Endlers, Otos, an Assassin Snail and a Nerite. I had some Amano shrimps but I think recently I have got a small spike in Ammonia (0.25ppm) and I think the shrimps have succumbed to it.

Looks good. Why do you have an assassin snail with a nerite?

Had the Nerite from the start but then got an infestation of small limpet-like molluscs so bought the Assassin.

Today caught first sight of one of my clear Amano Shrimps and one of my dark Amano variants for the first time in ages, so they haven’t been killed off by ammonia!
My local aquarist has reported that some API ammonia tests can give false results and an alternative test (which may be Salifert) is proving to be clear when API isn’t.

Another tweak to the Ďscape - added a piece of root-wood. Might mess about re-positioning it until I get the effect I want.

Did you have to add anything over the outflow nozzles in order to reduce the flow? I have Chile Rasboras and Neocaridians in my tank and am experimenting with the Hagen cylindrical prefilter sponges over mine. The sponges have greatly reduced the flow so now I don't have to turn off the pump every time I feed the fish. The inhabitants are also appreciating the reduced flow and are much more active now. I'll have to wait and see what overall affect it has on the tank's filtering capabilities.

I know I'm going to sound like the bad guy but have you considered just doing one of the fish as I feel the smallness of the tank really makes stocking with more than one fish hard. Personally I don't mind putting a little more fish in a tank than most people but say if you just did ember tetras then you would get schooling behavior more often. Other than that it looks good. Hopefully those crypts will send out runners for you so you can make the front look more lush to continue the jungle look all the way to the front.

My 29 gallon tetra tank that I just throw plants at

Embers werenít showing themselves so I added a few Neons. They were decidedly shy so I added Endlers and now they are all free swimming in the mid to upper layers. The amount of plants and the mass of ceramic media in the tank have assured me that the numbers of fish Iím keeping is okay.
Regarding lessening the flow, Iíve just cut a slot in a strip of coarse filter foam and inserted the nozzles so the flow is now directed downwards, like in a Fluval Edge. Very happy with the whole setup overall.

Neat solution to the old Fluval Flex vent problem to stop fish and shrimp getting into the pre-filter compartment. This has been variously solved on the forums with sponge, mesh, filter wool, etc.

All new Flexes now come with snap-in plastic screens fitted and these can also be purchased as a spare for around a couple of pounds. Just fitted mine and am very pleased with the result. They still wonít stop baby shrimps or tiny fish, but I donít have that problem!

That's a nice scape I think a type of moss or fissidens on that piece of wood.

110g Tropical Community & Sakura Shrimp
55g BN Breeding Grounds, Peacock Gudgeons, Panda, Pygmies, & Smudge Spot Cories, Rili Shrimp
10g RCS and show guppies

Thanks, but I removed the wood and Java Moss and added another rock in a quest for a ďmountains and jungleĒ motif.

Bit of a new layout, few more Crypts to add after Christmas.

Much nicer without the wood IMO. Good job!
