eleocharis belem

I am new to the hobby and in the midst of planting my first tank.
I am having so much fun!! one of the plants I bought was giving me a super hard time last night prepping it to be planted.
I bought 6 tubs of eleocharis belem tissue culture.
I soaked the plant to get the gel off, but cant seem to separate it into very user friendly segments. am I right in thinking I should just cut it into small pieces and poke it into the substrate? Id appreciate any tips.

I was able to make a couple small cuts in the roots and then sort of "unroll it" into a strip and then I snipped that into 9-12 pieces.

Looks like this when I was done
