My 1.4 Gallon planted tank

Hey people of TPT!

I've been a lurker for a little while now and recently started my first planted aquarium. I have kept reef tanks before and I wanted to try something new and also thought that some of my equipment would be useful in the freshwater realm. I set up a teensy tiny little 1.4 gallon betta cube (about 8X8X8) on a budget and here is what I'm using so far:

Lighting: 9W CFL bulb 5000k in a standard desk lamp socket. I might figure out a new setup for this however because the light is only a few inches from the top of the aquarium and I am worried that it is too powerful for my plants.

Substrate: I am using CaribSea EcoComplete black gravel and i have a bed of around 2 inches.

Filtration: A aquaclear 20 that I had laying around. Its on its lowest setting and I have filter floss and some sponge in there right now. Should I put in any biological media?

Livestock: I literally JUST set up my tank so i only have plants as of now for the cycle, but I am considering some red cherry shrimp or an african dwarf frog once my tank is settled.
Dwarf hairgrass
Anubias Congensis
Water Wisteria

I also have a digital thermometer and a nice little piece of Mopani driftwood that I boiled.

Thanks for looking, guys. Any tips, tricks or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am a huge newb.

Now for some pictures!!

IMO that piece of Mopani, while nice, is just too big and imposing for your tank size. I'd swap it out for something smaller.

Do you mean in only aesthetic terms, or will they actually be detrimental to the tank because of their size?

no all filters will work ok for your tank. its just that for your really really really small tank, you want to go for the really really really small filter. thats going to be just about the smallest filter on the market. you have a Size small. you want a EXTRA SMALL. try checking out this one out.

I have the same one for you and i feel like its already to big for my 9 gallon.

Both, aesthetic it would look better with smaller wood and filter. Also the wood takes up alot of space (as mentioned) and it might block light to some plants. I don't know how much flow the Betta would like, but that filter might be too much.

Here's another filter you could consider, I'm using it on my 1.5G.
