Mopani Wood

I purchased a chunk of Mopani Wood from the local store....I just remembered that these things can let out a lot of tannins and discolor the water, and with my nano tank, the color might be quite noticable. Not too sure yet as i just started the soaking and changing water process.

I really like the look of wood but don't know if I have the patience to wait months and months for the tannins to leech out.

I don't know if the wood will ever stop leeching out tannins....I could be soaking for years and it would still - correct?

Appreciate any comments.

Thanks

Wood leeches tannins for a looong time but its less and less as time goes on.
Boiling is like putting Fast forward on the leeching process. It can still take a few hours but its better than months.
Find a pot the wood will fit in (I had some large pieces and bought a metal feed bucket and placed it on a propane burner outside) add water and boil for 1-2 hours. Dump off water, add new water and repeat until water being dumped out is barely tinted. First several dump offs will likely be brown like coffee. Rotate wood every water change or ever other water change to ensure all of it spends some time boiling. Use a timer/alarm to remember so all the water does not boil out.
A lot of people have good things to say about Seachem purigen placed in a filter but you have to remove it and bleach clean it as it gets dark. If you leave it in after its turned color it's not going to be very effective.

Due to photobuckets new bs cost for use of images on forums I have deleted all photobucket accounts. I apologize if you enjoyed or found my photos helpful.

I have 3 large pieces of mopani in my 75. When it was new, I started the soak.....changing the water every few days. I soaked for 6 weeks....was still getting tannins. Now, these pieces were too big to boil. I put them in the tank. Added 2 Purigen packets to each canister, they totally snatch up any hint of tannin. I change them every few weeks. They are always dark brown when I take them out.....so, to make it short, I say find a way to use Purigen.

Those tannins are good for fish and you get an instant black water tank. People add leaves and extract to get the benefits and the look.
I love mopani.
