A 6500k 20W CF bulb is the max I think before you blow something....lol

A 15W CF is already 3WPG...which is border-line algae invasion[I know this from my 10gal disaster tank] but if it's incandescent it's no help[but will grow algae!].

Hope this helps!

Actually, I can't remember where I read this, but it said 3WPG in smaller tanks (especially less than 10g) is actually not that much and 2WPG for tanks over 55g is plenty enough to grow most plants.

wait. found the link

I use a 15w CFL in mine, had to loosen the plastic clear thing a little to get it to fit though. There is some algae growing on the sponge I stuck in the filter slot.

Well you can probably use the 20w CFL, but you'll need to mod the hood like remove the clear thing and the reflector and replace something in it's place to prevent the the top of the hood from damage.

I think the 15w is fine, I have a loose bit of HC stuck in the java moss and it looks fine to me.

Ditch your current lighting, go down to Home Depot and get the light seen here. It's 27W, should cost about $21 or so, and is a great light for any tank under 7g. I have 27W over my M, and it grows whatever I want it to, HC and Glosso AND HM carpet with hardly any effort.
