Help/Advise setting up nano

I want to do a nano because I have 1 dario dario (the other died) in my 10g and he will not be happy with the active fish I plan on having in there.

I'm fairly limited on my budget and plant access. The lfs here doesn't have much of a variety so I am going to try to keep it simple. Since I know nothing about nanos, I was hoping to get some basic starter info! I don't have anything yet, no tank or lighting or substrate, I'm starting from scratch here. I'm want to keep it right around 5g. Not sure if I want high or low tech, either.

Recommendations on decently priced tank kits? Bearing in mind I live in Alaska so shipping is killer. Do you think it would be cheaper to just get a tank of craigslist and do the lighting myself? Recommended WPG and plants for a nano? Anything else I could stock with the dario dario?

I am not sure on the lighting, seems like an awful lot for a 4g? tips anyone?

That is a great setup. I have tried the finnex line nano tanks and they are great looking. I would go with that setup and 26w is good for growing most plants. Also that is a good price for that whole set up. You might have to upgrade your filter though.

+1... just upgrade to an AquaClear 20 or something around that size... Nanos are pretty much the same thing as larger tanks just on a small scale... You can always order plants off line, many people here have had great success with that... There are a ton of low light plants that are very hardy... You can does the tank with ferts, like Excel, a 500 ml bottle will last that tank over a year with daily dosing... (Excel is a substitute for pressurized CO2, just in an organic form, some what less effective then a pressurized system.

you can also swap out the light with another CFL at like 6,700-10,000*K (I think they come with 50/50 atinic (no use for plants) then you'll be able to grow almost anything.
