fluval edge: base and carbon filter questions

Just received my Fluval Edge today. I was surprised how filmsy the base feels. I thought it would've been a sold piece but it was just a thin plastic shell and there were no ribs for any strength reinforcement. Do people have any problem/concern about it? When I press against the part deflects a bit, so I am kind of surprise that it can support 70+ lbs and afraid that one day the plastic will crack or something.

On a different question, what do people think about the carbon filter that came with it? In my old 93 gal tank, I never used carbon filter because I read that it was only a very temporary filtration and if you use it long enough, the toxic will re-release back to the tank. So I've only used mech and chem filtration and actually thinking of putting extra ceramic balls in place of it. Any opinions?

I've had my edge running for about a week now, but I removed the carbon from the filter after reading people said it's best without. Is it better to run the carbon for the first month or so and then remove it?

Does the carbon remove some "bad stuff" when the tank is first cycling?

thanks for validating re. carbon. I will probably use it for 2-3 weeks so it absorb any chemicals from the tank manufacturing.

Any one have comments about the base? Should I trust it?

My Edge has been fully filled with Flourite and a couple of relatively large rocks for a couple weeks, seems fine. The base doesn't flex although I'll admit I was similarly surprised to see how this thing was constructed. The cantilevering of the tank doesn't seem like a problem either.

On the carbon, I replaced mine with Purigen. The consensus seems to suggest that carbon only works for a couple weeks but can serve as a decent attachment site for bacteria long-term. So if you don't want it in there, I'd consider replacing it with either more cermamic noodles rings or Purigen.
