My first 2.5 gal planted tank.

hello everyone, I've decided that i want to join this wonderful forum and start my first planted tank after seeing everyone's artistic aquariums. Just a little info about myself, I am currently an undergrad student at UCSD studying Management Science. I been in the aquarium hobby since I was a child, however i never ventured into the realm of planted aquariums before. I created this thread to share my first attempt at a planted tank and document the start-up, troubles i will go through, and how to maintain a beautiful(hopefully) tank. The goal of this tank is to create an Iwagumi style tank with HC and dwarf grass fields.

Tank: standard 2.5 gal AGA
Filter: nano filter (arriving soon)
Heater: marineland 25 watt
Light: Current USA 12" dual 18 watt with 10k/6.7k (i only have 1 bulb in there as of now)
Soil: ADA aqua-soil amazonia
fertilizer: Excel
CO2 injection: planning to do a DIY co2 reactor

Livestock and plants I want to add:
HC (just planted)
Dwarf hairgrass
red cherry shrimp
Endler live-bearers

Questions:
1. can i use one 18 watt bulb or should i use two?
2. does anyone around UCSD area have dwarf hairgrass they can sell me?

I will post some pictures of the set up when the water is a bit more clear. I will deeply appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Regarding your setup; you will likely want to dose more than just Flourish Excel (i.e. you will likely need to dose both macro and micronutrients). In addition, as you will have CO2, Excel will not required, as it is redundant.

For your lighting, a single 18 watt bulb should suffice.

@Darkblade, thank you for your input. I actually bought Flourish instead of Flourish excel. is there any other method of dosing should i know about?

You may need to dose macronutrients (NPK), so do a bit of reading on the EI dosing regimen. Most people use it with great results.

Regarding your layouts, it is a bit difficult to compare the two, as one is zoomed in, and the other is a full tank shot. If you could get two full tank shots, it would be easier to compare and make suggestions.

I think if you moved the rock on the left into the middle of where it is in both those photos, it would look great.
