Pointed head appears to be male. Eggshaped head is probable to be female

Thanks for your reply, I canít really see a difference in head shape- I was going on the dorsal fin. Their behaviour isnít telling me much either, sometimes they hang out together and other times the one I took to be male chases the other when he sees it.

I have seen so many female Bolivian Rams have physical characteristics that had made them appear male ( and vice versa) that I dont take much stock in this as a consistent way to sex. But, with Bolivian females, once mature, you will see a distinctive rounding and reddening of stomach when close to spawn. Also, the dropping of the vent in females.

With German Rams I see more sexual dimorphism between males and females-- especially the dark rams. The males are decidedly larger.

Do you know how old your pair is?

Iíve had them for about 3 weeks but they were quite big when I got them and have grown since, I reckon theyíre about 2 1/2Ē, the larger one maybe a bit more.

The specimens you show are a male/female pair. The emerging ovipositor on the female is clearly showing and is far thicker than that of the male. If you compare the ventral fins, you'll see that the male has longer and more produced ventral rays. Coloration is stronger and more extensive in the male than in the female. These characteristics are all seen in adults and it is far more difficult to accurately sex this species as younger specimens. If good feeding and optimum water conditions prevail, I predict you will soon see a plaque of eggs from your pair. Good luck!

They are gorgeous arenít they and have great personality, they often shoal with the runny nose which looks really cool. I would love for them to spawn but unfortunately they never do.
